Summer 2006 Rally Reports - Part 3

West Cowick
27th April to 1 May 2006

In starting this rally report I would like to apologize to all of you who weren’t there, you don't know what you missed. The McArdle/Scarll partnership created a rally which combined flair and imagination, together with that certain something, the rallying 'X-factor' (and I don't mean Simon Cowell).

Meeting in the Scout Hut on Friday night we helped celebrate Janices’ 50th Birthday with a beautiful cake which Paul claimed he made himself!

Saturday evening we all met first of all around the Scout Campfire, where Graham led the singing and Paul looked after the fire. All enjoyed the singing and most of the actions were at the right time, and if you sat in the right place, you didn’t get too much smoke in your eyes.

After the sing-song we moved to the Scout Hut where we had one of the best rallying suppers I've ever had, the steak pies were superb. The planned barbecue for Sunday had to be cancelled due to rain; however, we all brought our own food to the Scout Hut to eat and were entertained later by the Marshal's cabaret. Nice legs Paul! And Janice if you would like to practice cleaning let me know!

Before flag on Monday morning bacon sandwiches were sold in aid of Childline and £35 was raised. At flag it was announced that the competition had been won, not by the Sinclairs, but by the Pharis', better luck next time Bob & Maureen.

David Bird in his new role as Northern Secretary welcomed New Ralliers Peter and Christine Kissagizlis to the club. This was their first time in their Autoquest 160 motorhome, their first motorhome, and their first time rallying, however you would never have guessed. David then presented the Assistant Marshal's plaque to Graham and Linda Scarll helped by Ryan and Beth, the the Marshal's plaque was presented to Paul and Janice McArdle, this time helped by Oliver. David managed to present the plaques despite not having much of a voice due to a heavy cold; some would say this was a blessing for his Mother.

Then all too soon it was time to go home. Thanks to all those who made this a Rally to remember, it was one of the best.

Alderwasley
27th April to 2nd May 2006

What a great site Flo and John found for us, just a stones throw from all the best gems Derbyshire has to offer. There was just one recommended way to approach the site according to the rally book instructions, but Stewart’s Sat Nav seemed to know of another, and seeing as Stewart didn’t read the instructions, he followed his route, which was 2ft wider than his caravan and involved climbing a 1 in 3 ½ hill but arrived safe and well, and for the rest of the weekend this route was referred to many many times as Stewart’s way.

Every one met in the converted barn which was tastefully decorated with bygones from yesteryear on Saturday evening. Flo and June provided a most delicious roast chicken and salad tea, including fruit pie pud. Flo then gave our minds a full workout with one of her quizzes, which was won by Alyson Borg with all her youthful knowledge, well done.

Flag was on Monday morning, which gave Stewart a chance to thank Flo and John, and their very able assistants June and Peter for running a wonderfully enjoyable rally, which we for one family will would love to attend if Flo and John run the rally again next year.

Wimblington
28th April to1 May 2006

Another annual Pea Shooter Contest (second actually) beckoned, so in the delightful late April weather we made our way back to Wimblington. The field was in lovely condition and Vic & Barb Oakley were all set up and waiting for us, there would be 11 outfits for the weekend.

Friday afternoon was taken up with catching up on everybody’s news. It seemed no time at all before we congregated for Tea & Coffee in the tent extension (thanks for bringing it Brian & Jean) and listened to tales of hang gliding feats putting up the tent.

Saturday was a free day but we had to be back at 6.30 for a Fish & Chip supper and games in the big tent. So after a little site seeing & retail therapy we were back in the tent. Card Bingo was one of the games played and inevitably one table seemed to win more than their share of games. Their cards were counted, their deck changed but still they won. But we all enjoyed the night.

Sunday 3.00 pm was the appointed time for the pea shooter competition. The tent filled with eager contestants. Joy & Ken officiating - Ken called out names - helpful advice given - don’t suck - close both eyes - ignore the person about to joggle your arm. Gradually we took our peas and lined up at the target. Ken was told that his laser target designator was not allowed even if it was not excluded by his rules! Top scorers were called forward for round two, then round three. All too soon it was the final, Ladies - Holly Barnicott versus Sue Jones (last year’s winner). Men - Jim Jessie James versus Vic Annie Oakley (yes he needs a haircut). Prize - winner to run the rally next year! Holly proved the crack shot. Then Jim & Vic, at seven peas each the scores were level – another seven and Jim had won. Flushed with success he then beat Holly – he really wanted to run next year’s event.

After a break for Tea we again gathered in the tent for more games, chat, nibbles and drinks.

Flag on Monday saw Holly & Jim presented with prizes for the competition by Vic, then Ken Wootton thanked Vic & Barb for a smashing rally, and presented the Marshals plaque. He then presented Jim with his Victory scroll and a partially completed rally proposal form. It was a great rally and really enjoyed by all.
